Educational Funding for HFHK Supported Children

Please consider making a regular contribution to the HFHK Children's Education Fund so that we can give the kids we support the very best opportunity to reach their full potential.  Read on to see why we need your support…

Nepal is a country where family ties mean a lot and jobs can still be given based on who you know rather than what you know.  Unemployment is high and competition for jobs intense.  Many families opt to send their children to third countries for better education and work prospects.  A child who has spent most of their life in a children’s centre does not have the opportunity to go abroad to study and work and without the family contacts, finding employment can also be very difficult.

Therefore aside from love and care, the most important thing that must be given to children living in a children’s centre is education.  Armed with a good education a child from any background has a much better chance to get a good job, live a fulfilling life and contribute to society.

Most children’s centres can only support their children up to Class 10 - Classes 11 and 12 (known in Nepal as College) are more than twice as expensive and University is expensive even for those from the middle class, let alone for a child with no family at all and supported by an organisation with responsibility for a large number of children.

The difference between supporting a child for education in Year 10 and a child for education in Year 11 can be as much as NRs 33,000 per year (AU$440), depending on which stream they study (science, management or commerce).  Some scholarships are available but not always accessible.  The government does not provide any form of student loan.  The majority of College (Class 11 and 12) and University students are therefore from the more privileged families with some wealth behind them or scholarship recipients.

Without the family contacts mentioned previously and with only a Class 10 School Leaving Certificate, a child from a children’s centre will have minimal opportunity to find decent employment or start any kind of career.  As a result, the cycle of poverty will only continue with this child.

We don’t want the help we’ve given these children over the years to have been in vain, which could be the result if we simply stop our education support after Class 10.

HFHK is seeking your contribution to our Children's Education Fund so that we can give the kids we support the very best opportunity to reach their full potential.

As Nelson Mandela once said:  "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
